Coffee With a Character: Who Would You Choose From Musical Theatre?

If you could have coffee with any character from a musical, who would be sitting across from you?

That simple question kicked off one of Barry and Gary’s most wide-ranging Forever conversations yet.

Would you choose someone you admire? Someone who could teach you something? Or maybe someone whose decisions have left you with many questions?

Gary’s first instinct was the Beast from Beauty and the Beast, preferably before the transformation. Not because he wanted a pleasant conversation, but because he wanted to understand the character’s regret and what it was like waiting for something he probably believed would never happen.

And that opened the door to a much bigger conversation about musical theatre characters.

What Would You Ask Dorian?

When the conversation turned to Forever, Barry landed on Dorian.

But not the young Dorian we first meet.

He’d want coffee with Dorian after everything begins to change.

The question would essentially be: Why did you do it?

That gets to one of the central ideas behind Forever. Dorian makes a wish and remains young while the people around him grow older. But is the wish really what changes him?

Or is it fame?

Celebrity?

The power that comes when people stop telling you no?

Barry and Gary intentionally don’t give the audience an easy answer. Part of experiencing Forever is deciding for yourself how much of Dorian’s transformation is supernatural and how much is due to Dorian himself.
